Gas fireplace repair in Chanhassen, MN when it clicks, sputters or goes out
A gas fireplace that will not light or keeps shutting off usually has a small, fixable cause: a dirty pilot, a worn part or a weak signal from the wall switch. We come to your home in Chanhassen, find the cause and explain the fix.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house right away, do not touch switches or phones inside, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Gas smells like rotten eggs. Do not try to light anything until a professional says it is safe.
If there is no smell and your fireplace is simply misbehaving, the sections below can help you describe the problem when you call.
Why won't my gas fireplace light, or why does it keep shutting off?
The symptom points to the part. Here is what each one usually means.
Pilot won't stay lit
Often a worn thermocouple or thermopile, a dirty pilot assembly, or a draft pulling the flame away. The part that senses the flame cuts the gas when it loses the signal.
Clicks, no flame
The igniter is sparking, but gas may not be reaching it. Causes include a clogged pilot orifice, a closed valve, or a failing gas control valve.
Runs, then shuts off
Dirt on the pilot, a thermopile giving a weak signal, or a venting restriction can make the unit quit after several minutes.
Remote beeps, nothing happens
Weak batteries in the remote or the receiver box, or a unit that lost its pairing after a power outage.
Cloudy, hazy glass
A white film builds on the glass over time. It often comes from the burner area and the media, and the glass needs the right cleaner.
Weak or yellow flames
The burner may need cleaning, the air mixture may be off, or the logs may be out of position.
What happens during a gas fireplace repair visit?
We start with the symptom you described, then test the system part by part.
Listen and look
You tell us what the fireplace does. We watch it try to light, then check the pilot flame and the wall switch or remote.
Test the parts
We test the thermocouple or thermopile, the igniter, the gas valve and the power or battery supply.
Clean and replace
We clean the burner, pilot and glass as needed and replace the failed part.
Check the vent
We confirm the vent pipe and termination are open so exhaust leaves the house.
Gas parts and connections call for a trained technician. Leave the burner, valve and gas line to us.
Does a gas fireplace need yearly service?
Yes. Gas burns cleaner than wood, but dust, pet hair and spider webs collect around the pilot and burner, and the vent can pick up debris. A yearly visit cleans the unit, tests the safety parts and checks that exhaust is leaving the house.
The most useful time is early fall, before you start using it daily. A fireplace that sat idle all summer is the one most likely to click and fail on the first cold night.
Gas fireplace service for Chanhassen's newer homes
Chanhassen saw heavy building from the 1990s onward, and many of the newer homes have gas fireplaces. Units from those years may now be old enough to need a new thermocouple, igniter or valve, which is routine work.
One pattern shows up after storms. When the power goes out and comes back, the remote or receiver can lose its settings, and the fireplace beeps without lighting. Fresh batteries and a re-pair often fix it. If they do not, give us a call.
We work across Chanhassen, Victoria, Chaska, Excelsior, Shorewood, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka. Wood-burning fireplaces are covered under chimney sweeping.
What affects the cost of gas fireplace repair?
- Which part has failed, since an igniter and a gas valve are very different jobs
- The make and age of the unit and whether parts are readily available
- Whether the fireplace needs a full cleaning in addition to the repair
- Venting work, if the pipe or termination is blocked
Tell us the brand, what it does and how old it is, and we can describe what to expect.
Gas fireplace questions
My gas fireplace clicks but won't light. What now?
Check that the wall switch is on and the remote batteries are fresh. If it still only clicks, the pilot may be clogged or the gas control may have failed. Leave the gas side to a technician and call us with what you see.
Why does the pilot light keep going out?
A worn thermocouple or thermopile is the most frequent cause. A dirty pilot or a draft can also blow it out.
Is the white film on my glass dangerous?
It is a mineral and residue buildup, and it usually points to a dirty burner area. It is not a hazard by itself, but left on, it can etch the glass. On a sealed unit the glass must go back with its gasket seated correctly, so we remove, clean and reseal it during a service visit.
Do you service vent-free gas logs?
Yes. Vent-free units rely on clean burners and working oxygen sensors, so a yearly check matters.
Does a gas fireplace need a chimney inspection?
The vent system does. Exhaust has to leave the house, so the pipe and termination get checked. See chimney inspection for how we look at venting.
