Chimney sweep in Shakopee, MN for river-district brick and newer fireplaces alike

Shakopee has houses that date from the railroad years and subdivisions built much later. Brickstone Chimney Sweep drives about 7 miles from Chanhassen to sweep, inspect and repair chimneys, and to service gas fireplaces. Call and tell us how old your house is.

I live in an old Shakopee house. What should a chimney sweep look at?

Look for a missing cap, crumbling mortar, and a flue that once served a coal or wood stove and now serves nothing.

Shakopee began as a trading post in 1851 and was platted as a village in 1854. The Shakopee Historic District runs along the river, and the Early Shakopee Houses were built as railroad-era workers' housing. Houses from that period often have brick chimneys and flues that have changed use over the decades.

An older flue may carry a furnace vent, a water heater vent or a former stove. When the use changes, the flue can be the wrong size for the new appliance. We inspect it and tell you if it needs a liner.

If the cap is gone, rain goes straight into the masonry. Start with chimney repair and ask about a cap and crown at the same time.

My newer townhome's gas fireplace shows an error. Who looks at it?

We do. A fault after a summer off is often a small part or a dirty burner.

The area around Canterbury Park has newer multi-family and single-family housing, and gas fireplaces are common in homes like these. After a warm season off, dust on the burner or a tired igniter can cause a fault. We clean the burner, test the ignition and check the venting.

Read more about the visit under gas fireplace repair. If you smell gas, go outside and call the gas company or 911 from there.

Does living near the Minnesota River bluffs change what my chimney needs?

It can. Open exposure and big trees put wind and debris on the chimney top, so the cap matters.

Highways 169 and 13 and County Road 101 cut through the city, and the Minnesota River runs beside the old downtown. Open ground and big trees near the river can mean more wind and more leaf fall. We check that the cap is secure, the screen is intact and the flashing still sheds water.

See chimney cap installation for options.

Should I inspect the fireplace before I buy a Shakopee house?

Yes, especially in an older home. An inspection shows what the flue and firebox look like before you light the first fire.

A chimney inspection tells you whether the flue is intact, whether the damper works and whether repairs should come first. If you are buying near the river district, ask about the liner. We also work in nearby Savage.

Shakopee chimney questions

Do you work on chimneys in the old river district?

Yes. We inspect, sweep and repair older brick chimneys, and we explain what we see before any work starts.

What is the fire pit rule in Shakopee?

Shakopee's city code covers recreational fires, including keeping someone with the fire until it is out. Check with the city for size and distance rules before you light a fire pit.

Do you service gas fireplaces near Canterbury Park?

Yes. We service gas fireplaces and inserts in that part of Shakopee and across the rest of town.

Is a cap needed in Shakopee's windy winters?

Yes. A cap with a screen keeps out rain, snow, leaves and animals, and it stays on better when fitted correctly.

Can a wood stove share a flue with the furnace?

A wood stove needs a flue of its own. Some gas appliances can share a properly sized flue. We inspect it and tell you what it can safely carry. Any change in how a flue is used calls for an inspection and the right liner first.

How far is Shakopee from your base?

About 7 road miles from our Chanhassen base.

Do you also cover Prior Lake and Savage?
