Chimney sweep, repair and inspection for Chanhassen homes

Chanhassen has houses of many ages. Older neighborhoods have ramblers and split-levels with masonry fireplaces that may have sat unused for years. Newer subdivisions tend to have gas fireplaces that run on a switch or a remote. Both need attention, just different kinds.

Why does a masonry chimney need a sweep?

Every wood fire leaves soot and creosote on the flue walls. Creosote is the sticky residue that burns hot if it builds up. A chimney sweep removes it, so the next fire has a clean path up and out.

When is a chimney inspection worth it?

Ask for one when you move in, before you sell, after a storm, or when something looks or smells wrong. A chimney inspection looks at the flue, the crown, the cap and the firebox, and tells you in plain words what needs work and what is fine.

What does chimney repair involve?

Most repairs are small if caught early: mortar joints that are crumbling, a cracked crown, loose flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Chimney repair keeps rain out of the brick, and water is what ruins masonry.

Do trees and lakes make a difference?

Homes near Lake Minnewashta, Lake Ann and Lotus Lake often have tall trees close to the roof. Leaves, twigs and nesting animals can end up in an open flue. A chimney cap closes that door.

We are based in Chanhassen, so these lake neighborhoods are close to home.

When is the right time for each job?

Any season works. Here is what each one suits best.

Spring

Look over the chimney after the heating season. Winter freeze and thaw shows up as cracked mortar, which is the right time to repair it.

Summer

Good for masonry work, liners, caps and gas fireplace service, because nobody needs the fire.

Fall

The favorite time for a sweep and inspection, before the first cold evening. Booking early gives you the most choice of days.

Winter

A fireplace that smokes, smells or will not light can be looked at now. Dryer vents also work hard in winter.

Questions homeowners ask us

How often should I have my chimney swept?

If you burn wood, have it checked every year before the burning season. How much you burn and what you burn decide whether it needs a sweep that year. We tell you what we see after looking.

Do you service gas fireplaces as well as wood fireplaces?

Yes. We service and repair gas fireplaces, and we clean wood stoves and inserts too.

My gas fireplace clicks but will not light. Can you fix it?

That usually points to the pilot, the thermocouple or the igniter. Call us, describe what happens, and we come to your home to diagnose it.

What is the difference between a Level 1 and a Level 2 inspection?

A Level 1 looks at the parts of the chimney we can easily reach. A Level 2 goes further, including a camera look inside the flue, and is the usual choice when a home is changing hands or something has changed. See chimney inspection.

Can you remove an animal from my chimney?

Yes. We remove animals from chimneys and then fit a cap so they cannot get back in. Chirping in early summer is often chimney swifts, which are protected, so the cap waits until the young have left. Call when you first hear it and we will tell you which one you have.

What affects what a chimney job costs?

The type of chimney, how high it is, how much buildup there is and what repairs are needed. Call us, describe the job, and we explain how it would be handled.

Which towns do you cover?

We are based in Chanhassen and work in Victoria, Chaska, Carver, Waconia, the south Lake Minnetonka towns, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Shakopee, Savage and Prior Lake. See the service area.

Do you clean dryer vents?

Yes. We clear the vent from the dryer to the outside wall, which helps clothes dry faster. Details are on dryer vent cleaning.
